‘AQUASCAPING’
Shadwell's local community is portrayed by Javier Galera's (b. 1997) debut solo exhibition, ‘Aquascaping’. Born in Ibiza, Spain, Galera brings a unique perspective, drawing parallels between his Mediterranean upbringing and the dynamic urban enclave of Shadwell Basin.
Galera's artistic journey unfolds naturally, driven by his commitment to authenticity. As a dedicated documentarian, he seamlessly integrates into Shadwell's society, capturing candid moments that reflect the community's intimacy and resilience while raising silent questions that challenge contemporary lifestyles.
Influenced by renowned artists such as Boogie, Martin Parr, Juergen Teller, Nan Goldin, and Larry Clark, Galera's work goes beyond documentation, delving into underground culture—from clubbing to graffiti and tattoo artistry, among others. Through his lens, he reveals the diverse tapestry of Shadwell's inhabitants.
Galera's creative process is an immersive exploration, guided by his keen observation of Shadwell's nuances. Each photograph results from meticulous attention to detail, capturing the essence of the community authentically.
The visual aesthetics of ‘Aquascaping’ showcase Galera's understanding of light and composition. Shot exclusively on film, the series alternates between stark monochrome and vibrant hues, capturing the essence of Shadwell's urban landscape.
Galera's goal is not to present a linear narrative but rather a collection of images capturing Shadwell's vibrant activities and diverse inhabitants. He refers to these moments as "reefs,” peaceful havens where varied social groups coexist amidst their differences. Furthermore, these reefs refer to places where people can escape the oversaturated contemporary lifestyle. ‘Fishtanks’, in contrast, allude to our strict and packed routines where we have little choice but to reconnect with others and avoid social and personal alienation. Therefore, Shadwell Basin is just one of many reefs found by the artist in London. This simplicity underscores the project's authenticity and the genuine spirit of the community.
‘Aquascaping’ invites viewers to immerse themselves in Galera's world, where photographs merge seamlessly with objects, creating an immersive tableau of urban life. Galera's vision transcends mere representation, offering viewers a deeper understanding of the community's coexistence.
As Galera's artistic journey evolves, so does his storytelling commitment. ‘Aquascaping’ is a precursor to future explorations, promising new insights into urban life.
